Our Honest Ponce Puerto Rico Hotel Review + Where We’d Actually Eat and Stay

Even before becoming a travel advisor, one of the biggest challenges I’ve always had is finding a good place to stay in my hometown of Ponce, Puerto Rico.

Over the years, we’ve tried multiple hotels in the area, and unfortunately, the experience has been consistently disappointing.

Quick Answer: Is Ponce Puerto Rico Worth Visiting?

Yes, Ponce is worth visiting if you want history, local food, and a more authentic look at Puerto Rico beyond San Juan. It is a strong option for travelers interested in Plaza Las Delicias, Parque de Bombas, local restaurants like Tablas, and nearby stops like Lajas. Just be careful when choosing where to stay, because our hotel experiences in Ponce have been disappointing.

Before you keep reading, you can watch our full Ponce vlog below. This gives you a real look at our hotel stay, the event at El Candil, walking through downtown Ponce, breakfast at Tablas, and our stop in Lajas for fresh pineapples.

It’s the best way to see exactly what the experience felt like from start to finish, including the parts that worked and the ones that didn’t.

Our Experience with Hotels in Ponce

In October 2022, we stayed at the Ponce Hilton. The property felt unkept, and management did very little to address the issues we experienced. It was disappointing enough that we decided not to return.

Then in December 2023, we gave the Aloft Hotel, part of the Bonvoy brand, a try. This was especially frustrating because, after more than 20 years as a loyal Marriott and Sheraton customer, it was the first time I felt the need to contact corporate. Even then, local management did nothing to address our concerns.

Those experiences made us more cautious when recommending hotels in Ponce. As travelers, we can tolerate small imperfections. As travel advisors, we need to feel confident that the places we recommend will treat guests with care, consistency, and basic hospitality.

Why We Decided to Try Ponce Plaza Hotel & Casino

A friend of ours who travels frequently had stayed at Ponce Plaza Hotel & Casino a couple of years ago and had an okay experience.

So in an effort to finally find a reliable hotel option in the south, both for our own visits and for our clients, we decided to give it a shot.

We wanted this to work. The location is convenient if you want to walk around downtown Ponce, attend an event nearby, visit Plaza Las Delicias, or avoid driving back to San Juan late at night.

Unfortunately, this stay landed right in between our previous disappointing experiences.

Our Honest Review of Ponce Plaza Hotel & Casino

From the moment we arrived, things felt off.

We attempted to check in around 3:20 PM, and while we understand check-in policies, the interaction with the front desk felt robotic and inflexible, especially considering the hotel appeared mostly empty.

We had an event scheduled at 4:30 PM, so this delay added unnecessary stress to the experience. A little warmth or guidance would have gone a long way, but the interaction felt more like a repeated policy than a guest-focused welcome.

Once inside the room, the overall experience continued to fall short. There were cleanliness concerns, and the room itself didn’t feel like a space you’d want to relax in.

Customer service throughout the property felt disconnected, like employees were simply going through the motions rather than focusing on the guest experience.

Even small details stood out. For example, the hotel bar was closed about 40 minutes earlier than its posted time, which made it clear that guest experience wasn’t a priority.

The only bright spot at the hotel was the food at Melao, which we did enjoy. Even then, there was some confusion as to what was available on the menu and the employees were a bit inattentive despite it being a relatively down time.

For us, a hotel stay is not only about having a bed for the night. It is about being able to rest, feel comfortable, and enjoy the property as a guest. That part was missing.

Overall, our stay at Ponce Plaza Hotel & Casino was disappointing, and unfortunately, we wouldn’t recommend it to our clients or return ourselves.

The Reason We Stayed Overnight: An Event at El Candil

The main reason for our visit was an event at El Candil focused on the story of Juan Segarra Palmer and Puerto Rico’s history.

This part of the trip was meaningful and educational. It reminded us that Ponce still has spaces where history, culture, memory, and important conversations come together.

For us, this was more than just attending an event. It connected back to Puerto Rico’s history, to people we know, and to the kind of local experiences that make a trip feel deeper than just checking places off a list.

That’s one of the reasons Ponce still matters. Even when the hotel experience disappoints, the city itself still has stories, spaces, and people worth showing up for.

Walking Around Downtown Ponce

After the event, we walked around Plaza Las Delicias and the surrounding streets.

Landmarks like Parque de Bombas, the Ponce Cathedral, and the historic buildings around the plaza still carry that iconic Ponce feeling. If you grew up visiting the plaza, those places are tied to memory in a way that is hard to explain.

As someone from Ponce, walking through these spaces brought back childhood memories. Parque de Bombas, the fountains, the lions, the cathedral, and the streets around the plaza all reminded me of different stages of my life.

At the same time, the area felt quieter than expected for a Saturday night, especially compared to how lively it used to feel years ago.

That contrast is part of what made this visit interesting. Ponce still has beauty, history, and identity, but it also feels like a place where the visitor experience depends heavily on where you go and what expectations you bring.

Where We Actually Recommend Eating in Ponce

If there’s one place that completely changed the tone of our trip, it was Restaurante Tablas.

After struggling for years to confidently recommend a spot in Ponce, we can finally say this is one.

Great for breakfast, brunch, and drinks
Consistent, friendly service
Relaxed atmosphere right near the Ponce Cathedral
Generous portions and well-presented food
What stood out most wasn’t just the food. It was the experience.

After dealing with slow and disconnected service at the hotel, walking into Tablas felt like a completely different world. The staff was attentive, welcoming, and actually seemed to care that we were there.

We visited Tablas more than once during this short trip, and that says a lot. It is rare for us to return to the same spot in a quick visit unless it is really worth it.

At night, Tablas worked well for drinks. The cocktails were well made, reasonably priced, and the atmosphere felt relaxed without being overwhelming.

The next morning, after a rough night at the hotel, we went back for breakfast. That breakfast helped reset the whole trip.

The menu is extensive and feels like a proper brunch spot. From omelets and pancakes to local-inspired options, there is something for everyone. The portions are generous, well plated, and came out fairly quickly.

And then there’s the avocado toast.

Simple, but done right. Fresh ingredients, balanced flavors, and one of those dishes you keep thinking about after the trip. As I’m writing this, it’s honestly one of the things I’d go back to Ponce for.

Daniela enjoyed her pancakes, Lucy had a solid breakfast, and overall the meal felt like the kind of experience we had been hoping to find in Ponce.

If you're visiting Ponce, whether it’s a cruise stop, a weekend trip, or visiting family, Restaurante Tablas is one of the few places we can confidently recommend.

Why Restaurante Tablas Stood Out

One of the biggest differences between Tablas and the hotel experience was simple: the people seemed present.

That might sound basic, but when you’re traveling, especially with family, service changes the whole mood of a trip. At Tablas, the team was helpful, the food was good, and the atmosphere felt easy.

It is located near the Ponce Cathedral, which makes it convenient if you’re walking around Plaza Las Delicias or exploring downtown Ponce.

For visitors, that matters. You can explore the plaza, see Parque de Bombas, walk around the historic area, and then sit down somewhere that feels relaxed and welcoming.

That is the kind of place we want to recommend: not perfect because nothing is, but reliable enough that we would send family, friends, and clients there.

Stopping in Lajas for Fresh Pineapples with Alberto Piñeiro

On our way back from Ponce, we made a stop in Lajas to visit Alberto Piñeiro, a local pineapple farmer from Pineapple Express.

This wasn’t just a quick roadside stop. It’s something we actually go out of our way to do.

Alberto has been farming pineapples in Puerto Rico for years, and if you’ve ever had one of his, you immediately understand why we make the drive. These are some of the sweetest, freshest pineapples you’ll find on the island.

He is usually there on weekends, and it is one of those experiences that feels very local. No big production. No tourist packaging. Just a farmer selling what he grows and sharing something he clearly takes pride in.

  • Fresh-cut pineapple
  • Natural juices
  • Watermelon, papaya, and other fruit depending on the day
  • A chance to support a small local business directly

What we enjoy most is the connection. You are not just buying fruit. You are talking to the person who grows it, learning a little about the process, and supporting local agriculture in Puerto Rico.

If you are exploring the south or southwest of Puerto Rico and find yourself near Lajas, this is absolutely worth the stop.

Why the Lajas Pineapple Stop Matters

Stops like this are exactly why we like showing Puerto Rico beyond the usual tourist checklist.

Yes, beaches and landmarks matter. But sometimes the most memorable part of a trip is stopping on the side of the road, talking to a local farmer, trying fresh fruit, and realizing that this is also Puerto Rico.

For travelers who want something more local and less packaged, this kind of stop is special. It is simple, personal, and connected to the island in a real way.

It also gives visitors a reason to explore beyond the same few places everyone repeats. If your route takes you through the south or southwest, setting time aside for local stops like this can make the day feel much richer.

Ending the Day at La Imperial Panadería

We wrapped up the day at one of our favorite spots: La Imperial Panadería.

There’s nothing like good Puerto Rican bread and pastries to end a visit to Ponce the right way. For us, La Imperial is one of those stops that feels familiar, comforting, and connected to home.

After a disappointing hotel stay, ending the day with bread, sweets, and a few favorite Boricua treats helped close the trip on a much better note.

Some stops don’t need to be complicated to be meaningful. La Imperial is part of our personal Ponce routine, and it is one of those places that reminds us why food memories matter so much when you visit home.

Other Highlights from Our Visit

Despite the hotel experience, the trip itself had some great moments.

We attended a meaningful event at El Candil, walked around downtown Ponce, visited Plaza Las Delicias, revisited childhood memories near Parque de Bombas, enjoyed Restaurante Tablas, stopped in Lajas for fresh pineapples, and ended with bread and pastries from La Imperial Panadería.

That is the honest contrast of this trip. The hotel did not deliver, but Ponce still gave us moments worth remembering.

Final Thoughts on Visiting Ponce

We had an awesome visit to Ponce overall, and I only wish the hotel stay had matched the rest of the experience.

Ponce still has history, food, culture, and meaningful local stops. Parque de Bombas, Plaza Las Delicias, El Candil, Tablas, La Imperial, and nearby places like Lajas all reminded us why this part of Puerto Rico deserves attention.

But when it comes to hotels, we still haven’t found a place in Ponce that we feel comfortable recommending without hesitation.

For now, we can clearly say we won’t be sending any of our clients to Ponce Plaza Hotel & Casino, and we don’t plan to return based on this experience.
