From Disney Costumes to DisneyBounding: What Can You Wear at Disney Parks?

Family riding Dumbo ride at Magic Kingdom with daughter dressed as Mary Poppins.

For as long as I can remember, our daughter has loved dresses she could twirl in—especially when they helped her transform into her favorite Disney princesses and characters. As a Disney family for the past eleven years, we’ve watched her go from Tinkerbell to Rapunzel, Anna, Mulan, Cinderella, Elena of Avalor, Doc McStuffins (she’s a plushie and pet lover!), Sofia the First, Captain Phasma, General Leia, Rey—and her ultimate favorite to dress up as: Mary Poppins.

Now that she’s fourteen, the Disney costume rules have changed. While character costume rules are strict for older teens and adults in the parks (outside of special events), she’s about to embark on the world of DisneyBounding and family-coordinated T-shirts. (Sure, matching tees might cramp her style a bit—but she’s game, especially if her aunt and uncle are along for the adventure.)

What Can Children Wear at Disney Parks and Cruises?

Whether buying a costume from Disney Store.com, Bibbidi Bobbidi Boutique, or your local department store, getting your child involved in choosing their favorite character outfit is half the fun!

  • Kids ages 0–13 can wear full character costumes.
  • Costumes must not drag on the ground or obstruct movement.
  • Masks are fine as long as they don’t block vision.
  • Costumes must be safe and easy to move in for rides.
Tip: If you're going on a Disney Cruise and visiting the parks too, bring versatile outfits that work for both. Pirate Night costumes are great for Magic Kingdom photos near Pirates of the Caribbean!

What Can Adults and Teens 14+ Wear?

Adults love dressing up too—and they get creative! While full costumes are usually not allowed during regular hours, you can dress up for special events like:

  • Mickey’s Not-So-Scary Halloween Party
  • Mickey’s Very Merry Christmas Party
  • Disney Jollywood Nights

For non-event days, DisneyBounding is the go-to option for those 14+. Be sure to follow the official costume guidelines.

Tip: Coordinated family themes are fun and make for great photo memories!

What is DisneyBounding?

DisneyBounding is a creative way to dress like your favorite character without wearing a full costume. Use colors, patterns, and accessories from their look to inspire your outfit.

  • Channel Ariel with purple and green clothing.
  • Represent Woody with a yellow plaid shirt and denim.
  • Accessorize with Mickey ears or themed bags.

Community Tip: Need inspiration? Join Facebook groups or browse Instagram hashtags for ideas. People love to help others plan bounds! Example: Someone recently shared their blue Mulan Loungefly bag with fireworks. I suggested a red jumper dress with a white top—perfect 4th of July Mulan DisneyBound!

Dressing for the Weather

Weather at Disney Parks can change quickly. Plan with flexibility and comfort in mind.

  • Choose breathable fabrics for warm days.
  • Pack backup outfits for young kids and bounders.
  • Layer during cooler months or when visiting Disneyland in winter.

⚠️ Our Story:
Our daughter wore a long-sleeve Mary Poppins dress at Disneyland where the temperature was in the 60s. Long sleeves helped with the cool weather.

At WDW’s Halloween Party in the humid fall? Not so magical. Two hours in, we were doing a costume swap in line. Luckily, she had a backup penguin tee to stay on theme!

No matter your approach—full costume, subtle bound, or custom shirts—remember why you’re dressing up: to celebrate, express yourself, and make magical memories. Take the photos. Embrace the change of clothes. Coordinate, laugh, and have fun. That’s what it’s all about.
