Is Wakey Monkey Worth Visiting in La Parguera, Puerto Rico?
A relaxed stop in one of Puerto Rico’s most popular coastal hangout areas
If you are spending time in La Parguera and trying to decide where to eat, Wakey Monkey is the kind of spot that makes sense for the area.
It is casual, comfortable, and easy to work into a relaxed day of walking around, grabbing a drink, or heading out toward the water. In our visit, what stood out most was not just the menu; it was the overall feel of the place.
La Parguera has a very specific energy. People come here to hang out, go boating, grab food, have drinks, and slow things down a little. Wakey Monkey fits naturally into that rhythm.

Where Wakey Monkey is located
Wakey Monkey is in La Parguera, in the town of Lajas on the southwest side of Puerto Rico. That location matters because people are often not just looking for one restaurant here. They are building part of a day around the area.
This is one of those places where brunch, drinks, a boat ride, a walk by the water, and a stop at another local spot can all happen in the same afternoon. That makes a casual and flexible restaurant more useful than something overly formal.
What the vibe feels like
One of the best things about Wakey Monkey is that it does not feel manufactured. It does not feel like a franchise trying to imitate local culture. It feels relaxed, lived in, and natural to the area.
There is indoor seating, outdoor seating, and a setup that makes it easy to stop in even if you just want a drink and keep moving. Lucy made a point in the video that it feels comfortable and homey, and I think that is exactly the right word for it. My cousin Dafne and her husband Miguel are the owners of Wakey Monkey.
That matters more than people think. In a place like La Parguera, atmosphere is part of the experience. You are not only buying food. You are buying how a stop fits into the day.
A comfortable space that feels more local and personal than overly polished.
What is on the menu
Wakey Monkey offers a full brunch-style menu, which is part of what makes it appealing for travelers. You are not locked into one narrow type of meal.
During our visit we talked through a mix of options, including chicken and waffles, omelets, eggs, coffees, drinks, mocktails, and Puerto Rican fritters. That combination gives the place flexibility for families and small groups where not everyone wants the same thing.
That kind of menu is useful in La Parguera because people may be arriving at different times of day, before or after another activity, and not necessarily looking for a heavy sit-down meal.
The local food angle
Part of what makes this stop interesting is that it is not only brunch in the generic mainland sense. There are local options that connect much more naturally to Puerto Rico.
In the video we talked about fish fritters, twice fried -breadfruit called tostones de pana, and bacalaitos. I do want to make one correction here. We did not try the bacalaitos ourselves because we are vegetarians and do not eat fish. We heard from other customers, and from my uncle as well, that they are delicious.
If you are not familiar, bacalaitos are codfish fritters. Recipes can vary by place, so I am not going to pretend to give a full how-to here. What matters for this review is that they are one of the recognizable local food references on the menu and part of what makes the stop feel rooted in Puerto Rico.
A stop like this works best when you want a mix of casual brunch energy and local Puerto Rican flavor.
Why Wakey Monkey works well in La Parguera
Wakey Monkey is not trying to be the fanciest place in the area, and honestly that helps it. It works because it matches how people actually use La Parguera.
You can stop for brunch, grab a drink, walk around the main area, look at excursions, and keep the day moving. That practical flexibility came through clearly in our visit.
If you are planning a day out here, that ease matters. Some places are good on paper but awkward in real life. This one feels easy to fit in.
A quick note on Mata la Gata
If you are researching La Parguera, you will probably also come across Mata la Gata. It is a cay, not a town or neighborhood.
The name of the cayo, Mata la Gata, translates literally to Kill the Cat. However, loosely translated in local vernacular it means Nurse Shark Grove.
Isla Mata la Gata is situated between Cayo Enrique and Cayo Caracoles. All three are part of the La Parguera Nature Reserve, about 1 to 2 nautical miles south of La Parguera in the town of Lajas, on the southwest side of Puerto Rico.
I wanted to mention it here because people planning a day in the area often pair food stops, boat time, and cay visits together, so knowing what Mata la Gata actually is helps when putting together the day.
Who this stop is best for
Wakey Monkey makes the most sense for travelers who want a casual stop with a local feel rather than a highly polished destination restaurant.
It works well for couples, families, and small groups who want:
- a relaxed brunch or lunch option
- a place that feels more local than touristy
- a drink stop that can fit into a bigger day in La Parguera
- something easy and flexible near the action
If that is what you want, this is a good one to keep on your list.
La Parguera works best when you let the day stay a little loose.
